Childhood Reds fan makes debut as Manchester United Women continue title charge
Manchester United secured yet another win in the Women's Super League on Sunday, as Leah Galton, Alessia Russo and Nikita Parris scored in their 3-0 destruction of Tottenham Hotspur at Leigh Sports Village.
It was a pretty one-sided affair. United had the majority of the ball and enjoyed putting the visitors under pressure high up the field. Maya Le Tissier and Mary Earps came to the rescue to see off any threats, but the home side were very much in the driving seat for the 90 minutes. Here are five talking points from the game:
Should United win their remaining two league games then they’ll be on 56 points. Chelsea will be on 58 should they win all of theirs. Manchester City will finish the season on 50 if they win every remaining game and Arsenal would be on 53. That means United are in contention for a spot in the Champions League, but could that opportunity slip away?
City and United go head-to-head in two weeks and another draw would put United on 51 points while City remain behind on 45. But Arsenal and Chelsea also need to face each other on the same weekend. If all else fails, United have a hefty goal difference. However, as it stands, Champions League football looks very much on the cards.
She was the youngest player in United’s starting line-up against Tottenham yet if you watched her play she looked like she'd been in this team for years. She plays the ball calmly, isn’t afraid to try the longer, diagonal balls and is happy to charge into the attacking half.
Her last-ditch effort to deny Beth England on Sunday was sensational. There is no doubt it would have been 1-0 to Spurs had Le Tissier not read the player and the game perfectly. What an addition she has been this season!
