Cheye Alexander scores Gillingham's winner against his old team Wimbledon

Gillingham manager Neil Harris got what he wanted from match-winning defender Cheye Alexander on Saturday.

The right-back converted a volleyed effort to put the Gills ahead against his old team Wimbledon - a goal that turned out to be the winner.

Harris has been demanding more from the 28-year-old. The Gills manager has started him in the last two matches after using him sparingly in the last couple of months.

Alexander joined the Gills in the summer after a successful trial - having been released by Wimbledon.

Harris said: “He had played at the level and the level above, a lot in the National League as well. We know he is a competitive full-back in this division.

"He has played a lot of football this season, not been in the team recently as Robbie McKenzue has played so well at right-back. As soon as I put Robbie at left-back, Cheye has come into the team. He has performed well.

“The goal was slightly out the ordinary for Cheye, especially in game time and training as well, but he possess quality with the football and it wasn’t just his goal, showing a lot of composure in a topsy-turvy stop-start first half.

“Every now and again I have to remind him that he can be a Rolls-Royce but he has to play at that tempo all the time. He has to make sure he is a League 1 right-back and not a National league right-back - no disrespect to the level - that is what he has got to be and that means he has to be at it every time.

“My criticism this year is that he hasn’t always been on the front foot, and been at full-tilt, that is down to me to manage and it is my job to get more from the senior payers. One area I have worked with Cheye is he has to make sure he is at it all the time.”
