Chernobyl radiation threat over, Russia's gas threat, Macron's troubled run for re-election
Meanwhile, word of a Russian retreat keeps spreading. Whether it's because of Ukraine's resolve on the battlefield or a tactical withdrawal, the Russians have pulled back, as announced, from points in the north. As for pledges of a humanitarian truce around Mariupol, the Kremlin so far is refusing to let up.
Vladimir Putin on Thursday warned that as of April 1, the gas taps would be closed unless Russia was paid in roubles paying through Gazprombank. Germany's chancellor called it a bluff, while making provisions in case the Kremlin cuts off supplies to Europe.
Here in France, the war in Ukraine has given Emmanuel Macron a massive boost in the polls. However, that lead is no longer as solid, although he is still a shoe-in to make the April 24 run-off. Macron is hitting the campaign trail and is being forced to answer questions about a Senate committee report that blasted the outsourcing of government policy during Covid to private consultants like US firm McKinsey.
