Chelsea vs Liverpool, Man City vs Bristol City: The 8 biggest wins ever in the WSL

Chelsea went top of the Women’s Super League yesterday after thrashing Leicester City 9-0 at the King Power stadium. 

The result comes just a month after the Blues beat the Foxes 7-0 in the fifth round of the FA Cup and ensures that a third successive league title is now in their hands. 

It was a crushing victory from Emma Hayes’ side and one that looked as though it could break the record for the biggest ever margin of victory in a WSL game at one stage. 

But in the end, Lydia Bedford’s side were spared the embarrassment of a landmark defeat, despite being humbled by a rampant Chelsa team. 

Nonetheless, this seems the perfect time to cast our minds back to some of the great routs of the past and take a look at some of the biggest victories in WSL history. 

We’ve gone through the record books and found the top eight hammerings of all time. Unsurprisingly, there are some familiar teams that feature:

In 2017, Chelsea played Liverpool during the Spring Series of the WSL. 

The game emphasised the gulf in class between the Blues and a Liverpool team that had begun to fade away from the league’s leading teams. 

Emma Hayes’ side struck seven goals in total, and many of the scorers that day are still vital members of the Chelsea squad today. 

Indeed, Fran Kirby, Ji So-yun, Maren Mjelde, Erin Cuthbert and Drew Spence all got on the scoresheet. 

Chelsea went on to win the Spring Series on goal difference, ahead of Man City. 

In November 2020, Man City thrashed a depleted Bristol City side 8-1 in a controversial WSL tie. 

Former Bristol boss Tanya Oxtoby had five of her players missing because of Covid-19 and wanted the game to be postponed because of safety concerns. 

But the FA ruled that the club had enough players to compete
