Former Chelsea defender William Gallas says he cannot understand why the Blues bought Romelu Lukaku amid a lacklustre first season back at the club. Gallas questioned the decision to sign the Belgium striker for a club record £97.5million fee because he’s never finished the season as a league's top scorer.
The signing of Lukaku last summer was seen by many as the catalyst to spark a sustained challenge for the Premier League title after he plundered 30 goals in 44 appearances for Inter Milan last term. However, he has struggled and laboured this season; scoring just five top flight goals.
His lack of form has seen him replaced by Kai Havertz as the team’s focal point in recent weeks, and the 28-year-old has failed to impress in the limited time afforded to him with a shocking miss in Sunday’s FA Cup final victory over Crystal Palace.

Lukaku was also handed a rare start by Thomas Tuchel in the midweek defeat to Arsenal, but rarely threatened for the Blues and was withdrawn after 60 minutes. Gallas, who won two league titles during his five seasons
