Chatham Town suffer setback with 4-0 Isthmian Premier midweek defeat at Enfield Town after 3-2 victory over Welling United; Trip to Cheshunt next this weekend
Boss Kevin Hake is calling for Chatham Town’s squad to keep on improving after he said he can see them evolving.
Chats battled to a 3-2 victory as they denied Welling United the chance to return to the Isthmian Premier summit last weekend.
Substitute Bradley Stevenson broke the deadlock in front of another strong attendance on the hour and, four minutes later, forward Kola Salami doubled the Chats lead.
Demaray Anyadike pulled one back for Ryan Maxwell’s Wings, only for exciting young prospect Jack Lyons to restore the two-goal Chatham cushion. Zak O’Keefe netted a second for Welling but the Medway outfit held on in difficult conditions.
It was a result that left Chatham just outside the play-off spots before their 4-0 midweek setback at high-fliers Enfield Town.
“It was a really enjoyable Kent derby and I thought both sides contributed to a very competitive game,” said Hake before Tuesday’s match.
“The weather conditions certainly played their part, which made it difficult at times, but I was delighted with the character the lads showed to come through with a 3-2 win.
“We know the great football this squad can produce, and we have seen plenty of evidence of that already this season, but it was the blood-and-guts side of Saturday’s performance that pleased me the most.
“There were moments when we had to dig in, compete and show real togetherness, and the lads did exactly that.
"You can really start to see this group evolving and under-standing what is required to win different types of games.
“The result certainly makes the league table look a lot healthier from our point of view, although we are still in the early stages of the season and there is a long way to go.
“We have to keep building, keep improving and make sure
