CF Montreal says it's beefing up security after post-game violence, vandalism

CF Montreal is decrying acts of violence and vandalism following its Wednesday game.

The team said in a statement on its website Friday that the trouble erupted after its loss to the Canadian Premier League’s Forge FC on penalty kicks in the Canadian Championship final.

After losing to the Hamilton, Ont., team at Saputo Stadium in Montreal’s east end, several objects, including pyrotechnic devices, were tossed onto the pitch and at security staff, the team says.

The club also reported acts of vandalism in the stadium concourse.

“These actions endangered the safety of those in attendance and are strongly condemned by the club,” the statement says.

The team says it intends to investigate and impose sanctions on those involved in Wednesday’s incidents.

“Individuals who are formally identified will also receive a lifetime ban from the stadium,” the statement reads.

CF Montreal says the team will also strengthen security at the stadium and increase police presence for upcoming matches.

“Stade Saputo must remain a safe and welcoming environment for all. Passion, disappointment and criticism are part of sport. Violence, vandalism and behaviour that puts others at risk have no place."

Montreal plays next at home Saturday against Nashville SC.
