Jubilant Josh Campbell struck twice as Hibs floored champions Celtic on a frantic day.
The Easter Road ace bagged a fabulous first-half double for David Gray’s troops as they extended their unbeaten run 13 games with a big success. Campbell’s third and fourth goals of the campaign had the hosts in control, but they had to endure a fierce fightback from Brendan Rodgers’ men before they got over the line.
Having seen his side toil in the first period, Brendan Rodgers made changes and the improvement was vast. Daizen Maeda 23rd of the season halved the deficit in the second period and the Japanese then looked to have won his team a point with a second finish. However, Celtic celebrations were halted when it was decided after a VAR check that Alistair Johnston just failed to keep the ball in play before crossing.
That was a sore one for Celtic who, having suffered a hangover from their Champions League exploits in Munich in the first 45 minutes, showed resilience and character as they kept pushing to dodge a defeat. In the end, though, Hibs made it. Campbell’s goals were enough as their fans chanted Gray’s name near the finish of a match which continued their splendid recent run.
It was a thrill-a-minute contest which exploded from the outset. Hibs wanted a fast start and could not have dreamed of one better as they led inside two minutes. It was brilliantly worked as Kieran Bowie held it up to set the attack moving and Nectar Triantis released Campbell through on Kasper Schmeichel.
