Celtic crash OUT of Europe as Brendan Rodgers oversees another disastrous Champions League first – 5 talking points
Ciro Immobile climbed off the bench to hit two late Lazio goals and send Celtic crashing out of Europe after a 2-0 defeat in Rome.
The Hoops were still well in the hunt for the victory that would have kept their hopes alive until Immobile netted twice in three minutes and sicken them in the Stadio Olimpico. It means Celtic's Euro hopes are over for another season with a Group E game to spare against Feyenoord in their final fixture. A miserable night for the visitors was completed when they were awarded a penalty in injury time - only for it to be overturned after a VAR check. But it would have been too little, too late.
Yet it was an encouraging enough start from Celtic with positive play from James Forrest setting up a chance for Kyogo and the Japan start tested Ivan Provedel between the sticks for the home side. But the Hoops had a huge let off after 10 minutes when Matteo Guendouzi dinked a ball over Alistair Johnston for Felipe Anderson only for the Brazilian to send his downward header off target.
The visitors, without really creating a real clear cut opportunity, were comfortable in the first half although Turkish referee Halil Umut Meiler flashed yellow cards at both Celtic full backs Greg Taylor and Johnston which saw them run the risk of of yet another dismissal on the road in this group.
Celtic had a glorious chance to grab the lead early in the second half after great play from Matt O’Riley to set up Kyogo but the striker’s low effort just crept past Provedel’s right hand post. That gave the visitors a real lift as the home support’s grumbles grew louder. And if Kyogo was unlucky there then their best opportunity came shortly after when Hyun-Jun Yang really should have scored.
And the Hoops were punished
