'Caused loads of bother' - Opposition journalist blown away by 'good' West Ham U23 player

Lee Sobot of the Yorkshire Evening Post has been left impressed by West Ham United youngster Harrison Ashby.

During the week, the Hammers’ U23s side faced Leeds United in a Premier League Cup last-16 match and cruised into the next round with a 5-1 thrashing.

Leeds may have opened the scoring in the 16th minute through Mateo Joseph Fernandez, but West Ham soon turned the game back in their favour and didn’t look back from there.

Seemingly at the heart of it was Ashby, who caused the opposition a lot of problems while playing on the right side of the defence.

Indeed, 88 minutes into the game, Sobot wrote: “Has caused loads of bother from right-back for the Hammers, a good player.”

TIF Thoughts on Harrison Ashby and West Ham…

It’s interesting to see another talented right-back start to make their way through the West Ham youth setup. After all, 22-year-old Ben Johnson was playing at U23 level not so long ago but now regularly starts for the senior side.

Of course, Ashby does already have that experience, too. Indeed, he has played five times for the first team across all competitions.

However, with the likes of Vladimir Coufal and Ryan Fredericks also to contend with, it may be hard to get a lot of game time in the near future. Still, at 20 years of age, he has plenty of time on his side. Judging from Sobot’s comments, he’s impressing plenty at youth level, so perhaps the next test of his talent will be to go on loan somewhere.
