Casemiro signing has helped Erik ten Hag debunk a Manchester United transfer theory

Among the many accusations thrown at Manchester United this summer, one stated that the club no longer has the pulling power it once had.

Critics highlighted their inability to quickly wrap up a deal for Frenkie de Jong, who in the past may have not thought twice about relocating to Old Trafford. The arrivals of Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez and Christian Eriksen went down well with supporters, but none were considered marquee.

Some pointed to the De Jong frustrations and Darwin Nunez’s snub for Liverpool as examples that after five trophyless years, United could not command the market as they previously did.

Earlier this month, Dwight Yorke suggested that the club does not hold the same attraction after failing to qualify for the Champions League last season. “The players we are chasing are in such powerful positions, it’s very difficult to lure them away to come to United,” he said.

“The club have kicked themselves in the teeth and can’t attract the best players anymore. No Champions League football is a serious issue and it’s getting more and more difficult by the year.”

Even the staunchest of fans will admit that last season’s sixth-place finish was damaging to United's summer transfer hopes. But Casemiro’s arrival busts the myth that United don’t still have significant pulling power.
