Cardiff 14-49 Scarlets: Liam Williams bags a brace as rampant visitors thrash Blue and Blacks twice in a week

A Liam Williams double helped the Scarlets thump Cardiff for a second week running in the Welsh capital on Saturday afternoon.

The hosts completely capitulated in the second half, conceded 49 unanswered points to lose the match 49-14.

With the stern words of boss Dai Young ringing in their ears – earlier this week he warned players they were playing for their futures after last week’s defeat – the Blue and Blacks came flying out of the blocks. A strong carry from Rhys Carre set the tone and they were soon ahead when Theo Cabango continued his fine form by skinning Johnny McNicholl before going over on the far side, with Jarrod Evans converting.

They were in again after 11 minutes. Lovely work from Owen Lane on the near touchline created the space and he drew the last defender before sending Lloyd Williams cantering towards the tryline from 40 metres out. Evans again converted and, in truth, the Scarlets looked a little like rabbits in the headlights, lacking any real shape or intent.

The hosts continued to work their way into good attacking positions thanks to some ropey Scarlets defence – they missed 14 tackles in the first half – but they struggled to capitalise and Jarrod Evans missed a testing penalty as the game approached the half hour mark.

The Scarlets grew into the match towards the end of the half, though, and started to look more threatening. Cardiff indiscipline put the visitors into a good position and, after a number of penalties, Sione Kalamafoni tapped and went quickly from five metres out only to drop the ball over the line.
