"Can't see any way back" - Journalist drops damning verdict on future of £8.5m Aston Villa ace

Aston Villa winger Trezeguet is unlikely to have a future at the club, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Having signed from Turkish side Kasimpasa in 2019 for £8.5m, it looks like Trezeguet’s three-year stay in the Midlands could be coming to an end.

The 27-year-old made just one Premier League appearance in the first half of last term as he found himself out of favour with Dean Smith and then Steven Gerrard.

This led to him being loaned out to Istanbul Basaksehir in February until the end of the season.

Trezeguet performed well in Turkey’s top-flight, scoring six goals and providing four assists in just 13 matches.

Despite his impressive form during his loan spell, O’Rourke thinks Villa have moved on from Trezeguet, and he does not expect the attacker to feature in Gerrard’s plans moving forward.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, O’Rourke said: “You can’t see anyway back for Trezeguet in that Villa team right now, the way things are going. Steven Gerrard is busy making signings to improve the squad.”

The Egyptian forward could not have done much more during his spell away from the club to prove his ability to his current employers.

However, he is still likely to find himself behind a number of players in the pecking order upon his return to Villa.

Looking at the wingers at Villa Park right now, it is hard to see Trezeguet getting into the side ahead of Emiliano Buendia or Leon Bailey any time soon, while Philippe Coutinho can also play out wide.

Furthermore, Gerrard regularly turned to a narrow 4-4-2 formation in the final months of last season, meaning wingers were surplus to requirements.

As a result, Trezeguet is unlikely to be needed in 2022/23, and it may be best for Villa to sell him while he still has a year left on
