Callum Walsh crowns Irish homecoming with second-round TKO

Callum Walsh defended his WBC Continental Americas Super Welterweight title at the 3 Arena with a devastating second round knockout to push his unbeaten professional record to 12-0.

The Cork native was the headline act in Dublin against Przemyslaw Runowski of Poland, returning to Ireland for his first fight since 2019 when he was an amateur.

Less than three years in the paid ranks and Walsh has reeled off a dozen successive victories under the tutelage of renowned boxing trainer Freddie Roach.

The contest was brought to a shuddering halt with a minute to go in the second round when a left hook sent the Pole crashing.

Emmet Brennan is the new Super Middleweight Celtic champion after defeating Kevin Cronin by split decision.

The two men slugged it out for eight rounds and while Cronin appeared to be the busier fighter, landing more punches (163 v 137) and more power punches (146 v 93), the judges sided with the Tokyo Olympian in a close encounter.

Two of the three officials backed Brennan (78-76 and 78-75) with one voting in favour of Cronin 77-75.

Unbeaten Irish heavyweight Thomas Carty moved his record to 9-0 with a dominant display at the Docklands venue.

The 28-year-old has now won eight of his nine bouts by means of knockout.

Carty was in destructive mode in the second round with three knockdowns.

A huge body hit had Vergara on his knees and while the Argentinian tried to absorb the punishment until the bell, he hit the canvas for the third and final time with 10 seconds remaining in the round before the towel was thrown in.
