Bulls vs Stormers URC clash breaks 14-year-old attendance record

Billed as the clash of the season so far, the United Rugby Championship fixture between the Bulls and the Stormers didn't disappoint on Saturday as the Cape-based franchise ran out 23-19 winners in a tense affair.

While the rugby on display was hard, uncompromising and typical of a South African derby, the fixture broke a few records on the night as 41 205 turned up at Loftus Versfeld. 

Not only was it the highest ever attendance for a URC match in the southern hemisphere, but it was also the highest attendance for a Bulls home game since 2009!

While a large percentage of the crowd was there to roar on the home team, the Stormers had their fair share of support, which captain Deon Fourie acknowledged.

"I don’t think it was just 41,000 Bulls supporters. I think it was almost half-half, so thanks to those who came out, it ranked up there for me," Fourie said after the match.
