BRYAN ROBSON: The only way is up for Ten Hag but it's NOT a quick fix

Manchester United fans have been asked many times to show patience and they are really going to need it now.

Erik ten Hag is facing an incredibly tough job but it is an opportune moment to reset. United have had far too many managers in recent years and they need to trust this one to get it right.

I'm sure Edwin van der Sar, the former United keeper who is now Ajax chief executive, has been truthful in his appraisal of Ten Hag. Edwin has shared a lot of information about the coach since United made their approach.

He has talked highly of his character, his standards and his ability to improve youngsters, plus get the best out of established players. There is also pressure to win every week at Ajax and that expectation will be even heavier when he walks through the doors at Old Trafford.

Having Steve McClaren alongside will also be invaluable if he rejoins the club. McClaren was there as Sir Alex Ferguson's No 2 and would prove a useful confidant once again, as there will be testing times.

In a perverse way, the current malaise should help. You can't get much lower than that result and performance against Liverpool, so the only way is up.

As gutting as it was to watch, there was a moment during the second half of Tuesday's drubbing when Liverpool's Sadio Mane was defending on the edge of his own six-yard box. One of their best attackers helping out his mates. It sounds simplistic but that moment summed up what United need to get back to: togetherness.

Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, we had a compact side who were good on the counter attack, then we changed to a high-pressing team. The consequence has been a group of players caught between styles who produce these horrible performances from time to time.
