Brock's Weinert, TMU's Rhooms named top players in U Sports basketball

Brock's Madalyn Weinert and TMU's Aaron Rhooms were named U Sports players of the year for women's and men's basketball, respectively, on Wednesday.

Weinert, a fifth-year guard/forward with the Badgers, took home the Nan Copp Award after a season in which the St. Catharines, Ont., local led in points per game (24.1), overall points (530), and field goals made (196). Also producing on the defensive side of the ball, Weinert led with 14.4 rebounds per game.

Rhooms, was awarded the Mike Moser Memorial Trophy, the first player from TMU to be so honoured. The fifth-year guard from Mississauga finished third nationally in scoring at 22.0 points per game, while shooting 50 per cent from the field on 376 attempts. He recorded three outings of 30-plus points this season.

His MVP season propelled the Bold to the No. 1 overall seed heading into the playoffs, closing the regular season on a five‑game win streak to secure a first‑round bye and home‑court advantage, leading to a Wilson Cup title and a berth in the U Sports Final 8. 

The women's Final 8 begins Thursday in Quebec City, while the men's tournament starts Friday in Calgary. CBC Sports is streaming all games here.
