British billionaire Nick Candy confirms he is still interested in Chelsea bid despite sanctions

Nick Candy is still pursuing a deal to buy Chelsea, confirming his interest in the club remains after Roman Abramovich was sanctioned by the UK government.

On a chaotic day for the Blues, Abramovich saw his assets frozen, meaning that he cannot receive any money for the sale of Chelsea Football Club.

However, while he remains the owner, the club cannot buy players, offer existing players new contracts, sell any merchandise or tickets that have not already been bought.

Abramovich must either let the club go and see the money go elsewhere – possibly to charities in Ukraine – or stay in charge and leave Chelsea in a perilous position.

The current licence granted by the government allows the club to carry on playing matches, but not be sold. They would need to be granted a new licence to be sold, but it has been confirmed that this is a possibility.

Candy has confirmed that he is retains an interest in buying from Abramovich, working with other potential investors on a bid.

Speaking earlier in the week about a potential involvement in a deal, Candy told The Telegraph: ‘We are looking at what the art of the possible is.’

Candy also said that he has ‘spoken to most of the parties’ about putting an offer together for Chelsea.

A spokesperson for Candy also revealed that he would be willing to revamp Stamford Bridge:
