Britain's Mia Brookes makes history with snowboard slopestyle world title

Sixteen-year-old Mia Brookes became the youngest world champion in snowboarding history with stunning slopestyle gold in Bakuriani, Georgia. The British star landed the first-ever CAB 1440 double grab in women’s competition in a superb second and final run. Ad Brookes, in her first season on the senior international circuit, scored 91.38 to beat Olympic champion Zoi Sadowski-Synnott to gold.

Snowboard'Mind-bending stuff' — Impressive Kleveland successfully defends slopestyle world title4 HOURS AGO «I honestly feel like I'm going to cry,» Brookes said. «I have never been so happy in my life. I can't even speak I'm that happy.

»I was at the top of the course and my coach said, 'If you want to win this just try the 1440.' «I tried the 1260 in practice, I came around and almost went 1440, so I knew it was possible on this jump. »I tried it [the 1440] once before in Absolute Park but this is the first time I’ve stomped it so I am super happy." Brookes is Britain’s first-ever slopestyle world champion and the nation's youngest-ever world gold medallist in a freestyle event. She was too young to compete at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics.

The junior world champion has enjoyed a superb debut season, becoming the first woman to land a flat-spinning 1260 at the Kreischberg big air World Cup in January. That month she took her first World Cup medal, silver in Laax, one of the resorts that the Brookes family motorhome regularly visited as she honed her craft. Silver went to Sadowski-Synnott and bronze would go to the woman that Brookes displaced as the youngest snowboarding world champion, Japan’s 24-year-old Miyabi Onitsuka.
