Bristol City injury update emerges regarding 25-year-old

Bristol City midfielder Joe Williams is expected to be out of action for a total of three weeks after picking up an injury in the Robins’ midweek defeat against Barnsley.

The 25-year-old was brought into the action on 39 minutes at Oakwell to replace teenager Alex Scott, who had to be withdrawn after picking up a knock.

Nigel Pearson then had to see the former Everton and Wigan Athletic man then pull up just 10 minutes into the second half, with Williams suffering yet another hamstring injury.

Thankfully for City though, it is not the same one to the tendon that saw Williams ruled out for two months from November 2021 onwards.

Williams has suffered with persistent injury issues since swapping the DW Stadium for Ashton Gate in 2020, with the midfielder restricted to just a single Championship appearance in his debut campaign.

And his issues haven’t cleared up this season, having made just 18 league outings but had featured in the last 11 matches in a row for City before this latest setback.

The Verdict

Williams has had such an unfortunate time of things since becoming a Bristol City player in 2020.

At his best, Williams is a combative, box-to-box midfielder but Robins fans probably wouldn’t know that as he’s been rarely seen on the pitch.

Nigel Pearson does have quite a few options in the middle of the park to choose from, so even when fully-fit Williams is always battling to get a starting berth.

But this latest setback won’t do Williams any good at all and he could now find it even harder to be trusted to put a regular run of matches together by Pearson.
