Breakthrough: David Ornstein drops more news as Spurs close in on another ‘Rolls-Royce’ signing

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has confirmed that Tottenham are extremely close to signing Djed Spence, with a medical expected to take place within the next 48 hours.

The 21-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to N17 for what feels like forever, and after recently being omitted from Middlesbrough’s squad for their pre-season trip to Portugal, speculation over a switch to the Premier League was majorly increased.

Sky Sports reported last month that the Lilywhites were in advanced talks with the Teesside outfit over a potential deal, but the fee always seemed to be the major stumbling block when it came to negotiations between the two parties.

Now though, it looks as if the right-back could be unveiled as a Spurs player imminently, yet another impressive signing following the captures of Fraser Forster, Ivan Perisic, Richarlison, Yves Bissouma and Clement Lenglet.

Taking to Twitter, Ornstein revealed that Tottenham are set to sign Spence after a ‘breakthrough’ in discussions. He wrote:

“Tottenham on the verge of total agreement with Middlesbrough to sign Djed Spence. Talks between Daniel Levy, Steve Gibson, player rep Scott Smith have produced a breakthrough. If all goes to plan medical expected in next 48hrs.”

Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici have clearly had their sights set on Spence for months on end and it was starting to look like he might become the one that got away, but the hierarchy will be glad that they have finally managed to get a deal over the line.
