Breaking GAA Congress votes in favour of revamped All-Ireland Football Championship
GAA Congress has voted in favour of a revamped All-Ireland Senior Football Championship in 2023.
Delegates unanimously backed a tiered All-Ireland structure where the eight provincial finalists will compete for the Sam Maguire Cup along with the next eight teams ranked in order of league seniority.
Those counties will enter a round-robin stage comprised of four groups of four, with the group winners progressing straight to the All-Ireland quarter-finals.
The second and third-placed teams will vie for the remaining four quarter-final spots.
The 16 counties who fail to qualify for the top-tier competition will enter the Tailteann Cup, also based on four groups of four, guaranteeing every team a minimum of four championship games.
The Allianz Football League and provincial championships are retained in their current form, with the latter condensed into a five-week period.
