Brassil narrowly misses out on final place at UIPM Pentathlon World Cup Cairo

Ireland's Sive Brassil recorded an impressive display in the opening World Cup of the Modern Pentathlon season but fell short of a place in Saturday’s Final of the UIPM Pentathlon World Cup Cairo.

The 28-year-old finished 14th in her semi-final group with 1,026 points, which wasn’t enough to see her join the group of 18 athletes who progressed through to Saturday’s decider in the Egyptian capital.

Brassil had a particularly strong performance in the swimming discipline where she was sixth-fastest but the Galway native was hampered by some struggles in the fencing round. A solid laser run wasn’t enough to claw Brassil back into the decisive placings.

This week’s event in Cairo is the first World Cup to take place under Modern Pentathlon’s new format, which UIPM has created for the Paris 2024 Olympics. It is a demanding schedule with elimination at each round and just 18 athletes making it to the individual finals.

The next round of the World Cup season takes place in the Hungarian capital Budapest next month, with the action kicking off on 26 April.
