Boris Johnson weighs in on Novak Djokovic controversy with Wimbledon hint

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has weighed-in on the controversy surrounding tennis star Novak Djokovic, hinting he may need to be vaccinated in order to play at Wimbledon.

The Serbian ace has caught the headlines after his entry to Australia for the Australian Open was blocked, with the government cancelling his visa and stating he hadn't met vaccination exemption criteria.

That left Djokovic, defending champion at the Australia Open, looking set to be deported but on Monday he successfully won an appeal against the decision.

While Djokovic is set to feature at the competition down under, there's serious doubt as to whether he will be able to feature in other Grand Slams this year - including the French Open and Wimbledon.

French president Emmanuel Macron has stated that all sportspeople must be vaccinated and is heating up the pressure on French situations without vaccination, limiting their ability to attend events, which has caused plenty of uproar across the channel.

Now, the Prime Minister has hinted that Djokovic, and any other non-vaccinated sports stars looking to travel to the UK for tournaments like Wimbledon, may not be granted passage.

"Look, I think it's important for the Australian authorities to make their own dispositons," Johnson said when asked if Djokovic would be blocked entry to the UK for Wimbledon.

"All I would say about Novak Djokovic, against whom I have played tennis actually - he's pretty good - is that I believe in vaccination and I think it's a wonderful thing to do.

"I think everybody should get behind a programme that is allowing this country to be the most open economy in Europe and simultaneously to protect people up and down the land, so it has massive advantages."
