Body pulled from canal in Wigan as police and fire crews rush to scene

The body of a man has been pulled from the Leeds and Liverpool Canal in Wigan. Police were called to the canal near Horton Street at around 3.40pm on Monday (April 11) to reports of a body in the water.

Fire crews and paramedics also rushed to the area. Sadly, a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Although he has not yet been formally identified, police believe he is a man in his 40s. His next of kin have been informed.

There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death, a spokesman for GMP confirmed. A file has since been passed to the coroner.

In a statement, the force said: “We were called at around 3.40pm on Monday 11 April to a report of a body in the canal close to Horton Street, Wigan . Emergency services attended and a man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

“He has not been formally identified but we believe he is a man in his 40s - we have informed his next of kin. Enquiries suggest there are no suspicious circumstances and a file has been passed to the coroner.”
