Bochum vs Gladbach abandoned after linesman is struck by a beer thrown from the crowd

VFL Bochum’s match against Borussia Monchengladbach was abandoned after the linesman was struck by a beer thrown from the crowd.

Gladbach were winning 2-0 in Friday night’s Bundesliga clash with the game initially suspended after 77 minutes.

Linesman Christian Gittelmannn was hit in the head by the plastic cup thrown from the crowd, going to ground before being tended to by other match officials.

After a short delay, the game was called off with referee Benjamin Cortus ordering the players off the pitch.

Bochum players immediately confronted the section of the crowd responsible for throwing the cup with the club’s social media account apologising to Gittelmannn.

‘Delay in the game. Some idiot has thrown something towards the pitch and hit the linesman.

‘The game has been delayed. Incredibly stupid and irresponsible behaviour, it has no place in a stadium! Idiot idiot idiot. Hopefully the linesman is ok.’

After the game was officially abandoned, the club added: ‘The match will not be restarted, #BOCBMG has been abandoned.

‘We can only formally apologise to linesman Christian Gittelmannn. A highly embarrassing and bitter evening for us. An extremely stupid action from an idiotic fan.’
