Blue Jays eliminated from playoff contention after another uninspiring offensive performance

After playing Game 7 of the World Series last fall, the 2025 American League champion Toronto Blue Jays were officially eliminated from post-season contention with Wednesday's 4-2 loss to open a doubleheader against the hometown Baltimore Orioles.

A Toronto offence that struggled to score runs for much of the 2026 campaign went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left eight men on base Wednesday. The Blue Jays saw their season record slip to 77-81 with four games remaining.

Pete Alonso paced the Orioles offence with his 41st home run of the season and former Blue Jays starting pitcher Chris Bassitt took a shutout into the sixth inning.
