Black Stallions off to Tunisia for 2024 African Rugby Cup

After a ‘successful’ training camp in Abuja, Nigeria’s senior men’s rugby national team, Black Stallions, left for Tunisia, at the weekend, for the African Rugby Cup slated to begin on December 18.

The Black Stallions departed for Tunisia aboard ValueJet Airlines, the official carrier of the Nigerian rugby team. Upon arrival, the team is expected to ramp up their preparations ahead of their first match on December 18, 2024.

Speaking on the competition, the team’s head coach, Steve Lewis, expressed confidence in the squad’s readiness to compete on the international stage after a long hiatus.

“We are excited to represent Nigeria once again in a 15-a-side competition,” Lewis remarked. “The longest journey begins with a single step, and this week in Tunisia will be a test of our resolve and preparation. It is a challenge we embrace wholeheartedly, and we are ready to engage with teams from across the continent.”

The Stallions will compete against host nation Tunisia, Ghana, and Zambia in the group stage. The winner of the group will advance to face Morocco, the reigning champions from the other qualifiers, for a spot in the final phase of the competition.

This marks Nigeria’s return to 15-a-side rugby competition for the first time since 2019, making it a crucial milestone for the team. The Stallions say that they are determined to make an impactful comeback and reignite Nigeria’s presence on the international rugby scene, fueled by passion, resilience, and unwavering support from home.

While addressing the contingent before their departure for Jemmal, the host city for the tournament, Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) President, Dr Ademola Are, urged the team to strive for excellence and bring glory to the nation.
