Bencic wins marathon Charleston Open final I Opelka lifts Houston title

Olympic champion Belinda Bencic won the Charleston Open title after beating Ons Jabeur in a marathon three sets, while Reilly Opelka claimed the US Men's Clay Court Championship.

Swiss Bencic, 25, claimed her maiden WTA clay-court crown by beating Tunisian fourth-seed Jabeur 6-1 5-7 6-4 in two hours and 35 minutes.

Former world No 4 Bencic, who beat Marketa Vondrousova to claim Olympic gold in Tokyo last summer, won her sixth WTA tour title and will climb up to world No 13 from 21 in the rankings.

World No 10 Jabeur was outplayed in the opening set and lost her first service game in the second, but hit back to take it 7-5 before Bencic won the crucial points in a topsy-turvy decider.

Opelka beat fellow American John Isner in straight sets to win the US Men's Clay Court Championship in Houston.

Opelka, 24, triumphed 6-3 7-6 (9-7) in one hour and 50 minutes against his 36-year-old opponent to secure his first ATP title on clay.

The final at the River Oaks Country Club between big-serving pair Opelka, 6ft 11in, and 2013 tournament winner Isner, 6ft 10in, was the tallest on the ATP tour in the open era.

Opelka clinched the only break of the match in the first set and went on to save three set points in the second-set tie-break, fighting back from 6-4 down to win his fourth ATP tour title.

Germany's Tatjana Maria defeated fellow qualifier Laura Pigossi 6-3 4-6 6-2 in the Copa Colsanitas final in Bogota.

Mother-of-two Maria, 34, currently ranked 237, overcame her 27-year-old Brazilian opponent in two-and-a-half hours to win her second WTA singles title and first since 2018.
