Becky Lynch explains how infamous Charlotte WWE segment was actually supposed to go
Becky Lynch has spoken out and revealed what exactly was supposed to happen during October’s belt exchange between herself and Charlotte Flair.
The two lynchpins of WWE’s women’s division both moved brands during the 2021 WWE Draft, despite holding the Raw and SmackDown Women’s championships. Effectively having the incorrect champion on both WWE shows.
As a result, a belt exchange was set, akin to how The New Day and Street Profits solved the same situation a year previously. However, the Smackdown segment infamously didn’t go according to the original plan.
Instead of handing her Raw Women’s Title to Becky, Charlotte went off script and dropped the belt to the floor. Leading to reports of a heated argument backstage where Flair was removed from the building.
Becky has now commented on the angle during her appearance on Steve Austin’s Broken Skull Sessions and revealed what should have happened that night and how she lost her cool because the actions of her rival.
“It should’ve been easy… It should’ve been a straightforward thing. We were supposed to exchange the titles. I grab it out of her hand unknowingly, I’m ‘Becky Two Belts’ for a second then I toss her the title, then she tells Sonya (Deville) to pick it up, then she challenges me to a fight, and I back out of it and I go. So everybody was supposed to get their moment there.”
“I told some people that this isn’t what’s going to happen,” Lynch said. “When I try to grab it, she’s going to drop it, and that’s what happened. And so, when all that was going on, I was just fuming. Mostly because I knew in advance that was what was going to win and I had no way to stop it. And anyway we talked about going into business for yourself and I lost my head a bit.”
