Beaten Andy Murray Motivated By "Nonsense" Regarding Future

Andy Murray said it had been "nonsense" to cast doubts over his future in the sport after being knocked out of the US Open on Friday. The former world number one who claimed the first of his three Grand Slam titles in New York in 2012, said he found motivation in proving the doubters wrong. "I want to push and see how far I can go. That will be motivational for me and interesting to see," said the 35-year-old after losing 6-4, 6-4, 6-7 (1/7), 6-3 to Matteo Berrettini in the third round at Flushing Meadows.

"Lots of people told me I wouldn't be able to play again, and lots of people told me I'd be able to hit tennis balls but not compete professionally again.

"That was nonsense, and I want to see how close I can get back to the top of the game. Yeah, that's what the motivation is."

Murray has steadily been rebuilding a career which appeared headed for retirement in 2019 when he needed to have a metal hip inserted.

That came after his ranking had slipped to 260 at the end of 2018.

At the end of 2021, he was at 134 but came into the US Open ranked at 51 and is expected to be close to a return to the top 40 after his run in New York.

However, he still hasn't returned to the quarter-finals of a Slam since Wimbledon in 2017.

"I'm not quite capable of the sort of movement and physicality that I had five, six years ago. I mean, that's pretty obvious," Murray said.

"I shouldn't expect to be. If you watch Rafa and Novak moving around the court now who are similar age, I think they're moving pretty similar to how they were five, six years ago, whereas for me there's obviously been a bit of a drop-off there.
