Bayern Munich chief makes admission on Man City loanee Joao Cancelo future after Thomas Tuchel arrival

Bayern Munich director Hasan Salihamidzic has suggested that Manchester City loanee Joao Cancelo will be in Thomas Tuchel’s plans for at least the rest of the season.

The full-back struggled to nail down a place under former boss Julian Nagelsmann and was benched in Tuchel’s first game in charge, as the hosts beat Borussia Dortmund 4-2.

Cancelo entered the pitch with 11 minutes to go, replacing Alphonso Davies at left-back. The 28-year-old has played 10 times for the German champions since his January move, scoring once and assisting four more, although he has only been named in the line-up six times.

The long-term future of the defender, who is contracted at City until 2027, is uncertain. However, despite only making the bench on Saturday, Salihamidzic has insisted that Cancelo will get the game time he craves during his loan spell.

Speaking to Kicker after the win over Dortmund - which took Bayern back to the top of the Bundesliga - he said: “The coach made that decision today but Joao is a top player that we need. For sure Cancelo will get his games.”

Cancelo himself only learned of the change in Bayern manager from a reporter after full-time in Portugal’s 4-0 Euro 2024 qualifying win over Liechtenstein during the international break.

Asked to give an immediate reaction, Cancelo said: “I did not know! I'm a little surprised. Thanks to Nagelsmann, he was the one who wanted me at Bayern. All the luck in the world to him.

“I'm going to try to adapt our coach's concepts as much as possible because we have several important games, in the decisive phase of the season.
