Basketball Ireland targets a 24% increase in clubs

Basketball Ireland has set a target of a 24% increase in the number of affiliated clubs as part of it's five-year strategic plan that was launched today.

The 2023-2027 plan outlines a number of targets, including increasing the number of registered players, referees, table officials and coaches by more than a third.

A target of a 24% increase on the number of clubs island wide by 2027 would bring the total to 260.

There are also plans to redevelop and modernise the National Basketball Arena during the lifespan of the Strategic Plan, while Olympic participation through 3x3 is also targeted.

It is hoped that 3x3 will become a high-performance Sport Ireland funded programme.

A new High Performance Unit is also on the agenda, along with developing Basketball Ireland’s Centres of Excellence around the country.

"This plan spells out the direction of travel basketball is going," Basketball Ireland CEO, John Feehan, said:

"It’s an exciting time for the sport and we need to keep that positive momentum going."
