Barnabas Varga on the mend as Hungary’s Euro 2024 star pictured for first time since sickening Scotland collision

Stricken Hungary frontman Barnabas Varga has been pictured in hospital for the first time since suffering a sickening collision in the match against Scotland.

The striker hit the deck after attempting to get on the end of a free-kick ahead of Angus Gunn and his teammates were immediately calling for medical attention with the Ferencvaros man out cold on the Stuttgart turf. There was a lengthy delay as the medics did their thing, with Magyars captain Dominik Szoboszlai so distressed he was in tears.

The Euro 2024 clash was extended by 10 minutes, and Hungary snatched a dramatic late winner in 100th to dump Steve Clarke's side out of the competition with just about the last kick of the game. An update from the Hungarian FA following the match confirmed that Varga was conscious and in a stable condition in hospital. He has since undergone surgery on a fractured cheek and appears to be on the mend.

He was visited in hospital by national team boss Marco Rossi and his backroom staff, as well as international and club teammate Endre Botka. A statement from the Hungarian FA read: "Led by Marco Rossi, some members of the professional staff and Endre Botka, representing the players, visited Barnabás Varga in Klinikum Stuttgart. The visitors interpreted the wishes of the whole team for the player."

Hungary now face a wait to see if the three points they managed from their three Group A fixtures will be enough to see them sneak into the last 16 of the tournament. They are in a better position on Croatia in Group B on two points, but must wait on the outcomes of the final games in Groups C through F before they learn their fate.
