Barcelona: Why tunnel footage of Xavi's tactical advice vs Inter is painful now

Barcelona are teetering on the brink of a Champions League exit in the group stages for a second season on the bounce.

Despite a busy summer of spending that saw Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Hector Bellerin and Marcos Alonso all come through the door, there’s a damning sense of deja vu swirling around Camp Nou right now.

That’s because the Blaugrana are lucky to even call themselves a Champions League club right now because they were very nearly dumped out of the competition on Wednesday night.

Despite opening up with a convincing 5-1 thumping of Viktoria Plzen, the Catalan giants are now crawling on their hands and knees having taken just a single point from the trip to Bayern Munich and back-to-back clashes with Inter Milan.

Defeats at the Allianz Arena and San Siro were compounded in mid-week when Xavi's men were forced to settle for a 3-3 draw against Inter on home soil that could easily have been much worse.

In what was pretty much a must-win game for Barca, the hosts had to lean on Lewandowski for two dramatic equalisers to even keep afloat in the competition and that's before we mention the fact that Kristjan Asllani missed a glorious chance to knock them out in stoppage time.

All in all, it made for a dreadful day at the office for Barcelona and one that will leave Xavi tearing his hair out as the Europa League once again beckons.

And the club legend will have been particularly furious with his players for the manner in which they conceded Inter's third goal on the night, which was tucked away by Robin Gosens.
