Barcelona star with 30 career assists wants out as Arsenal interest reignited

A veteran Barcelona star previously wanted by Arsenal looks set for a summer exit after becoming unsatisfied with the club’s contract renewal offer.

Barca have been in contract talks with Sergi Roberto over the past few months, with the midfielder keen on getting a new deal done. However, with time passing by, it looks less and less likely that a deal will be agreed.

A report from Adria Albets claims that hardly any progress was made in a meeting between the club and player on Tuesday.

The report adds that the Catalan giants are offering the 30-year-old a lesser salary. And although he remains keen on signing, an exit is now very much on the cards.

There is, however, due to be another discussion over the deal next Tuesday. By that stage, it’s hoped some progress will have been made.

Roberto has been at the Nou Camp his entire career, scoring 12 goals and adding 30 assists in 316 appearances in all competitions.

However, this campaign has been a tough one for the midfielder, who can also play at full-back.

Roberto started the season well but was injured against Rayo Vallecano in late November and has not featured since.

The report adds that Xavi still views Roberto as an important squad player. However, with a number of young players coming through, it would not be considered a disaster if Roberto moves on.

The next fortnight is expected to be pivotal to any deal being signed off. If one isn’t then potential suitors will almost certainly begin to queue up for the versatile Spain international.

Arsenal, for sure, are expected to be monitoring the situation as Mikel Arteta is a fan of the player.
