Barcelona's midfield options and why they might allow Frenkie de Jong to leave

Frenkie de Jong could be set to depart Barcelona this summer amid transfer interest from Manchester United.

The Netherlands international has struggled to consistently impress since joining the Catalan giants in 2019. De Jong rose to prominence during Ajax's unlikely run to the Champions League semi-final that season, and he has been tipped to reunite with former boss Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

The midfielder had stressed he is not keen to push for an exit this summer, and has become a key player in recent months under Xavi. However, Barcelona's well-documented financial woes has reportedly led the 25-year-old to be identified as a saleable asset.

It is also an area of the pitch where the club boast remarkable strength in depth, despite their struggles this season. De Jong has often been used on the right of a midfield three with Barcelona, and admitted following the Netherland's Nations League emphatic win over Belgium that he prefers a deeper role.

He told reporters: “I play a lot differently here than I do at Barça. I think this suits me much better. I like to be the first player to receive the ball from the defenders.”

Xavi recently confirmed Barcelona's financial situation could lead the club to make certain 'decisions' when asked about the future of De Jong. Here's a look at their other midfield options which could help ease the blow of a summer sale.

The last survivor of the famous Barcelona and Spain sides which dominated football almost a decade ago, Busquets remains a key player under his former team-mate. The 33-year-old missed just two La Liga fixtures this season - both due to suspension - and has one more year left on his current deal.
