Banyana Banyana seal first-leg victory over Algeria in AWCON qualifier
Banyana Banyana sealed a 2-0 victory over Algeria in the first leg of their qualifier for the Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (AWCON) at Orlando Stadium on Friday.
Hildah Magaia scored the first goal for South Africa with a set-piece in the 40th minute of a game as Kholisa Biyana's corner gave Magaia slot a stunning header, which was out of reach of goalkeeper Chloe N'Gazi.
With a 1-0 advantage at half-time, South Africa continued to dominate and kept N'Gazi busy.
Coach Desiree Ellis' side soon sealed their first-leg qualifying win as the ball to star striker Thembi Kgatlana ended the game in style with a neat finish in the 90th minute.
Banyana will take a 2-0 advantage as they travel to North Africa for the second leg on Wednesday at the Stade Omar Hamadi in Algiers.
