Bangladesh onslaught in front of 'home' Centurion crowd rocks Proteas

A trio of contrasting 50s from Liton Das, Shakib Al Hasan and Yasir Ali were the backbone of Bangladesh's 314/7 in the first ODI against South Africa at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Friday.

In front of a welcoming crowd of surprising Bangladesh support that gave SuperSport Park a Mirpur feel, they turned a steady start into an excellent finish to make their highest ODI score in South Africa.

Proteas ODI skipper Temba Bavuma had given the Tigers first use of a fairly paced surface, ostensibly based on the benevolent chasing history of the ground.

Bangladesh's start was circumspect, but sound with Tamim Iqbal (41) and Liton Das (50) knitting together a 95-run opening wicket stand off 21.3 overs.

It was a dismissal that shocked Das into action, from where he took toll of Keshav Maharaj's left-arm spin. Maharaj (2/56), who was preferred ahead of Tabraiz Shamsi, won that battle when he castled Das with an arm-ball.

Das though had rattled off his 50 off 66 balls and gave the visitors a reasonable platform of 104/2 in 23 overs.

It was wasted by Mushfiqur Rahim (9), who top-edged a sweep off Maharaj to David Miller at fine-leg as Bangladesh slipped to 128/3 in the 29th over.

Shakib (77), who initially wasn't in the touring group, then opened up after shaking off a leg impingement to play a gem of a knock.

He raised his 50th ODI 50 off 50 balls, but the calculated beauty of his 115-run stand with Yasir (51) was in how they shifted through the gears.

The first 50 of the stand was raised in 41 balls while the second 50 came off just 31 deliveries.
