Australian teenager Abi Harrigan aims to defy fractured fibula to compete at the Winter Olympics

Australian freestyle skier Abi Harrigan has revealed she will make a bold attempt to stay in the Winter Olympics despite suffering a fractured fibula.

The 19-year-old announced her withdrawal from the Beijing 2022 big air event on Friday, three days before the qualification runs.

But it came with the staggering plan to push through the pain barrier for the slopestyle competition.

Harrigan has nine days to prove her fitness before slopestyle qualification runs on February 13.

“Pretty upset to say I will be pulling out of big air due to a fractured fibula,” the teenager wrote.

“Trying to give it the best chance to be ready for slopestyle.”

Big air begins on Monday morning before the final takes place the following day.

“So stoked to be able to be here and also watch the big air in a few days’ time,” Harrigan said.

“Get it boys and girls!!”

Harrigan is also listed to compete in the halfpipe, beginning on February 17, but her plans for the event are unclear.

Australian moguls skier Taylah O’Neill attempted a qualifying run on Thursday night less than a month after suffering an ACL tear.

“She’s dealing with a lot more pain and suffering than me,” PyeongChang 2018 silver medallist Matt Graham said.

“It’s a shame to see her go out the way she has.

“These tough, firm conditions - you wouldn’t want a sore knee in this sort of stuff.”
