Australian cricket legend Rod Marsh dies aged 74 following major heart attack

Australian cricket legend Rod Marsh had died aged 74 following a major heart attack last Thursday.

The former wicketkeeper was taken to hospital after falling ill in a car shortly after arriving in Bundaberg to attend a charity event.

Marsh was recently moved to Royal Adelaide Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

His family said last week it was a “waiting game” to see if Marsh’s condition would improve.

Marsh played 96 Tests for Australia between 1970 and 1984, snaring 355 dismissals behind the stumps and forming an outstanding partnership with paceman Dennis Lillee.

He also previously served as Australia’s chairman of selectors before stepping down in 2016.

He is survived by his wife Ros and three sons - Dan, who captained Tasmania to their first Sheffield Shield win, Paul, a former CEO of the Australian Cricketers’ Association, and Jamie.

Tributes flowed from around world cricket, with former NSW wicketkeeper Daniel Smith remembering “one of a kind coach, mentor and person”.

“A lot of cricket’s success in Australia is owed to Rod,” Smith wrote.

“My thoughts go out to his family and the entire cricket community. A sad day.”

NSW wicketkeeper Peter Nevill was called up to the Australian Test side during Marsh’s stint as a national selector.

“I always found him generous and kind,” he wrote.

“While chair of selectors, with tongue in cheek, he called my wedding party to tell them they’d been ‘selected’.

“And witty: ‘Nev, every white wine wishes it was a red wine.’
