Australian Breeana Walker seventh after first two runs of Winter Olympics monobob

Breeana Walker is in striking distance of Australia’s fifth medal of the Beijing Winter Olympics after an improved second run in the monobob event.

A day after Jaclyn Narrocott made history by claiming the country’s first Olympic medal in a sliding sport, Walker sits seventh on Sunday heading into the final two runs the following day.

After impressive training form, Walker may be left to rue her mistake-ridden opening run which left her 1.11 seconds of Kaillie Humphries after the American pace-setter stopped the clock at one minute and 4.44 seconds.

Sitting 10th after her first effort, the Australian was one of the few competitors to shave time off in her second run in difficult conditions as snow fell.

This time, Walker was 0.88 seconds off Humphries, who set the pace again with a run of one minute and 4.66 seconds, to sit a combined 1.99 seconds off the lead ahead of Monday’s final two runs.

It will be a monumental effort to reach the podium as she sits 1.22 seconds of third-placed Laura Nolte of Germany.

“I’m not making it easy for myself, that’s for sure,” Walker told Channel 7.

“But I’m a fighter and we’ll keep calm.

“It was just another mistake in the second run that cost me some time.

“But I was really happy with the second run in general.

“So we just need to go and replicate that tomorrow.

“We’ll keep fighting out here.”

Walker, a former 400m hurdler who made a successful transition after injuries wrecked her chances of progression on the athletics track, will be looking to make it a remarkable Australian sliding double after Narracott claimed a shock silver medal
