Australian Breeana Walker finishes an impressive fifth in Winter Olympics monobob

Breeana Walker has recorded Australia’s best Winter Olympics result in bobsleigh, finishing fifth in the women’s monobob at Beijing 2022.

In the event’s debut at the Olympics, the former 400m hurdler was able to continually improve her position after being 10th following a disappointing first run on Sunday.

Walker, 29, improved to seventh place on her second run, and on Monday put down her best run of one minute and 5.16 seconds to surge to fifth and within sight of a medal heading into the fourth and final run.

She recorded another strong run of one minute and 5.21 seconds to clinch fifth, finishing behind American Kaillie Humphries, who led the event from start to finish to claim gold, and silver medallist Elana Meyers Taylor, also of USA.

Illustrating just how impressive Walker’s fightback performance was, she concluded the event 1.12 seconds clear of sixth yet was only 0.65 seconds behind Meyers Taylor.

Walker was also 0.43 seconds off bronze-winning Canadian Christine de Bruin.

“All I can say is, never count an Aussie out,” she told Channel 7.

“I fought back today. The girls in front of me are the best pilots in the world.

“So to be fifth behind them, in my first Olympics, I’m so chuffed. I’m so happy.

“Four years ago, I was on the sideline ... it’s amazing. It’s worth all the hard work and effort.”
