Australia suffer shock and Man City's Jill Roord frustrates USA on Day 8 of the Women's World Cup 2023

Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala inflicted a surprise 3-2 loss on co-hosts Australia to blow Group B wide open and dampen spirits in Brisbane.

Australia had taken the lead through Emily van Egmond before Nigeria scored three to mean Alanna Kennedy’s late header was only a consolation.

A wonder strike from Manchester City’s Jill Roord saw the Netherlands draw with the USA in a repeat of the 2019 final in a thrilling encounter.

The game’s other day saw Portugal defeat Vietnam 2-0 to knock out their fellow debutants and keep their own hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.

Australia 2-3 Nigeria

Australia missed the chance to confirm their place in the knockout stages as they suffered a 3-2 loss to Nigeria in Brisbane.

The home side saw efforts go narrowly wide from captain Steph Catley and Hayley Raso before they took the lead in the first minute of injury time through a scuffed shot from Van Egmond.

Nigeria hit straight back through Uchenna Kanu whose volley squeezed past Mackenzie Arnold to see the sides head into the break all square.

The Super Falcons then took a deserved lead as Australia failed to clear a corner and Osinachi Ohale knocked the ball in from close range.

Super sub Oshoala had forced the corner for the second goal before scoring Nigeria’s third only eight minutes after coming on.

The Barcelona forward, who was named on the bench after coming into the World Cup with an injury, latched onto a ball over the top of the Australian defence, rounding Arnold and City defender Kennedy to score.

Kennedy then gave Australia hope in the 10th minute of injury time, heading home to create frantic final moments but it was not enough for the Matildas who now need to beat Canada on Monday.
