Australia's GK Andrew Redmayne goes viral for crazy antics in WC play-off shootout win v Peru
Australia have booked their place at the 2022 World Cup.
The Socceroos took on Peru in their intercontinental play-off on Monday evening and finally achieved victory in a nerve-wracking penalty shootout.
Australia and Peru couldn’t be separated after 120 minutes of action, with only three shots on target mustered between them.
So it went to penalties and Graham Arnold decided to take a huge gamble by changing goalkeepers just before the footballing equivalent of the lottery draw.
Sydney FC goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne replaced former Brighton shot-stopper Mat Ryan in the 120th minute and it proved to be an inspired call.
When the shootout went to sudden death, Redmayne produced the biggest save of his career to thwart Alex Valera and send Australia to the World Cup.
The Aussie ‘keeper was certainly great entertainment value throughout the shootout as well.
Redmayne has a rather unique way of putting off penalty takers – dancing on the goal line like a bit of a maniac.
The 33-year-old performed a limb-flailing routine for every Peru spot kick, from the first by Gianluca Lapadula to the last by Valera.
Check out some clips of his wacky dancing during the shootout…
