Atletico Madrid hit with injury crisis ahead of Champions League second leg vs Manchester United

Atletico Madrid have been hit with an injury crisis ahead of their Champions League second leg with Manchester United later this month.

After Stefan Savic and Geoffrey Kondogbia picked up injuries against Celta Vigo, another Atleti defender has suffered a knock. Mario Hermoso is believed to have injured his adductor which will keep him out of the squad for the next couple of games.

Spanish newspaper Marca are reporting that Hermoso will be out of action for two weeks. If this timeline is correct, the 26-year-old becomes a doubt for the match with United on Tuesday, March 15.

Hermoso played in all of Atletico's matches in the group stages of the Champions League. Despite this, he was an unused substitute at the Wanda Metropolitano when Ralf Rangnick's men visited in February.

Diego Simeone opted for Savic, Jose Gimenez and Reinildo in that fixture but now that the former is out with an injury, Hermoso is likely to have been his replacement. This news will now cause a selection headache for the Atletico Madrid boss.

It is not all negative for the La Liga side though. Captain Koke has returned to training with the club's physio and it is believed that he should be fit to return against the Reds in just under two weeks time.

Manchester United return to action on Sunday when they face Man City in the derby. The match at the Etihad Stadium kicks off at 4.30pm.
