Aston Villa now have ‘main reason’ to consider Gerrard’s future at Villa Park

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard’s failure to improve his players could prove to be a reason the board eventually consider moving the Liverpool legend on, according to journalist Dean Jones.

Gerrard was appointed less than 12 months ago and was handed more than £60 million to bolster his side in the summer, but the pressure is mounting in the West Midlands.

Despite Villa stretching their unbeaten run to four games in the Premier League on Monday night, their 1-1 draw away to Nottingham Forest was not enough to please supporters.

The feeling of discontent was most apparent from the away end when chants for Gerrard to be sacked were heard echoing around the City Ground.

After the final whistle, Gerrard insisted that he needed more potency from his big-name attackers, such as Philippe Coutinho and Emiliano Buendia.

Former Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor recently described the club as ‘boring’ and ‘predictable’ under their current manager, although stopped short of calling for change in the dugout.

Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane also called on the West Midlands outfit to give their manager until January at least, saying Villa’s players need to do more as well.

Jones believes that the ex-midfielder’s failure to improve his first-team squad could be seen as a decisive factor in his future.

He adds that, throughout Gerrard’s tenure, there is not one individual who stands out as having grown under his leadership.

The journalist told GIVEMESPORT: “I can’t think of a single player that has improved under Gerrard. Maybe that is one of the main reasons Villa have to consider how long they let this continue.”
