Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard details 'open' Jurgen Klopp chat about Liverpool return

Steven Gerrard didn't walk into the Aston Villa job he holds currently off the back of his legendary name at the highest level, he returned to the club he forged a career as a player at and earned his stripes through coaching the U18s at Liverpool.

The Villa boss had just recently retired in November 2016 whilst at LA Galaxy and was instantly thrust into managerial world in the same month, after links to a vacant job at Milton Keynes Dons emerged. Gerrard reportedly interviewed for the role at the League One side but went on to state he wasn't ready for the job at this stage.

This did however make his intentions clear, Gerrard needed a return to the game and whilst physically he wasn't able to compete on the pitch anymore, he still possessed the mental edge over many in the sport that made him perfect for a role in coaching. In order to kickstart the second phase of his career, Gerrard returned to Liverpool as coach of the U18s after an "open" chat with Jurgen Klopp regarding his post-playing days.

Speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap, Gerrard opened up regarding his return to Liverpool at the beginning of his coaching journey. The Villa boss stated: “I got asked by Liverpool in my MLS days if I would be interested in coming back and doing my coaching badges at Liverpool and would I be interested in a chat with Jurgen Klopp, I said yes of course I would be open to the chat. I had a good conversation with Alex Inglethorpe and it was like, look, we’ve got the right people at Liverpool that can help you, develop you.
