Aston Villa: £55m duo 'haven't done enough' amid Gerrard meeting

Aston Villa pair Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings “have not done enough” recently, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

Watkins ended his long wait for a Premier League goal by scoring the clincher at Brighton, but the duo have both struggled in front of goal this term.

Watkins scored an impressive 14 goals in his debut season at top-flight level, while Ings struck 12 times in his final campaign as a Southampton player.

However, heading into the business end of the season, the pair, who were signed for a combined total of £50m, have been unable to find any consistency in terms of goalscoring numbers.

They’ve scored only 10 Premier League goals combined, which is part of the reason why Steven Gerrard’s side have won just twice since Christmas and have slipped down the league table as a result.

Villa did ease any growing relegation fears by moving nine points clear of the bottom-three after beating Brighton on Saturday.

Gerrard met with the frontmen ahead of the game at the Amex Stadium, before describing them as “outstanding” following the 2-0 success, but O’Rourke said that they need to start scoring more goals.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Two of the players who have not done enough in recent weeks are Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins. They’re the two main strikers at the club and Villa have not scored enough goals.”
