Aston Martin pondering change to power unit supply

Aston Martin Chief Technical Officer, Andre Green, has said that the team are weighing up producing their own Formula 1 power supply in the coming years.

The AMR22 will be powered by a Mercedes engine in 2022, with that in keeping with recent years for the Silverstone-based team.

Certainly, they’ll be hoping it can take them up the grid as they look to move on from a 2021 campaign that had its fair share of challenges thanks to some aerodynamic regulation changes, whilst 2022’s far greater rule overhaul also provides opportunity to progress.

2026, meanwhile, sees the power unit and engine regulations potentially changing and, ahead of that, Green has revealed that Aston Martin are currently looking into bringing production of said units in house in a bid to aid their performance and realise their targets.

“I think going forward with our ambitions, we’re definitely investigating our power unit supply in the long-term,” Green said via the F1 website.

“2026 is mooted as a new power unit regulation and I think, as a team, we’d love to be involved.

“We have Aramco now involved as a sponsor and I think conversations going forward in the next few years… we’ll see.

“For sure we’ll be looking at it in great detail and understanding whether there is a benefit to it in that direction.”
